Creative Framing Options

Framing your artwork can cost as much or as little as you like. If you’re able to visit your local frame shop and have something custom made, that’s fabulous, but if you’re on a budget here are several ideas that you might consider.

  1. Standard Poster Frame: Look for a basic, off-the-shelf poster frame in the appropriate size. These frames are readily available at many retail stores and are designed to accommodate standard sizes like 16x20". They are often made of plastic or lightweight materials, making them more affordable than custom frames. Standard sized frames may or may not include a mat. A two-inch mat would bring the size to 20x24”. Both options are typically available at stores like Blick, Michaels, etc., or online from Amazon or Target.
  2. DIY Wooden Frame: Purchase some inexpensive wooden molding or trim from a hardware store and cut it to the appropriate lengths. You can assemble the pieces using nails, screws, or wood glue to create a simple frame. Sand and paint the frame to match your aesthetic. This option allows for customization at a lower cost compared to pre-made frames.
  3. Clip Frames: Clip frames consist of clear acrylic or glass panels that hold your artwork in place. There are two pieces, and the art goes in between. These frames are easy to assemble and disassemble, making it simple to change the art inside. Look for clip frames specifically designed for 16x20" prints, as they may come in various sizes.
  4. Secondhand Frames: Check out thrift stores, garage sales, or online marketplaces for second hand frames. Someone else's discard might be your treasure. You might find frames that are slightly larger than 16x20" but can be easily modified by fitting a solid color piece of matt board into the frame from the back and then using double sided tape to center the artwork onto the matboard so that it is evenly spaced within the frame from the front. This option allows you to find unique and affordable frames that add character to your artwork.
  5. Washi Tape Gallery: Create a unique and trendy display by using washi tape to create a gallery-style frame. Select a few different colors or patterns of washi tape and apply them directly to the wall, surrounding your art print. This method is inexpensive, versatile, and allows you to customize the frame design to your liking.

Remember, while these methods are budget-friendly, they may not offer the same level of protection or preservation as professional framing options. But, as long as you’re not randomly slinging ketchup at your walls you should be good for quite a while, and you can always make a different decision later.
